Musings from the second floor...
We in the San Fernando Valley got a full dose of summer this past weekend, record high heat, power outages and public swimming pools filled to capacity. And yet, the 20th of June was just the first day of summer. It kind of makes you wonder what the rest of the summer will be like! But we shared a cool and refreshing worship service in the Parish Hall. It was wonderful to see so many people and to enjoy the singing of our favorite hymns and the special music by Brannon McCain. The barbeque potluck that followed was fabulous and it was especially nice to have the Thai congregation join us. Jesus knew what he was doing when he encouraged his followers to share meals together. Praise God!
In the scripture lesson for the first Sunday in July, we read that Jesus compares the people of his time to a child whose mother invites him to dance, but the child is too stubborn or perhaps afraid of making a fool of himself; and doesn't accept the offer. I can remember dancing with my father as a small child, with my feet on top of his, with his arms wrapped around me, teaching me how to dance. This is what Jesus is offering.
This summer I encourage all of us, to take the time to dance, in what ever form that may be. Come play and worship with Jesus at church on Sundays, out in nature on vacations, on the road as we travel to visit friends and family. Remember to take the joy of Jesus with you, and come home to us, renewed and refreshed, re-created in God's image. Amen!
